Junts per Catalunya has opened the process to select its candidate for the mayoralty of Barcelona for the May 2027 municipal elections, with a deadline set for June 21.

The pro-independence party is in the final stages of defining its lead candidate for the Catalan capital, following a lengthy period of deliberation. The designation comes after other parties such as ERC and Barcelona en Comú have already chosen their candidates, and with the expectation that the PSC will back the current mayor, Jaume Collboni, and the PP will nominate Daniel Sirera.
The selection process, which officially begins today, will follow the party's internal regulations and is scheduled to conclude on June 21 with a remote vote. Although the rules allow for other mechanisms, the presence of three contenders suggests an open primary. Pre-candidates must secure 20% of the membership's endorsements to be eligible.
Currently, three individuals have confirmed their interest: Jordi Martí Galbis, president of the municipal group and supported by former mayor Xavier Trias; Pilar Calvo, a member of Congress and president of Junts' National Council, who is close to president Puigdemont; and Glòria Freixa, a member of the Parliament, who could represent a third option.
Names such as Josep Rius, vice-president of Junts, and former minister Jaume Giró have ultimately ruled out their participation to avoid internal divisions. The possibility of lawyer Jaume Alonso Cuevillas had also been speculated, and he has expressed anticipation regarding the process.
The remote voting for party members will take place on the weekend of June 20 and 21. The results will be announced on the 21st at 8 PM, although there is a 24-hour window to file appeals with Junts' Electoral Ombudsman before the official candidate proclamation.
