The Junts party for Barcelona has opened the process to select its candidate for the 2027 municipal elections, with primaries scheduled for June 1st.

The race to lead Junts' candidacy for the mayoralty of Barcelona in the 2027 elections has officially begun. Following Josep Rius's withdrawal from leading the list to avoid internal conflict, a primary process is set to commence on June 1st. Several individuals have expressed their intention to run, including the municipal group leader, Jordi Martí Galbis, lawyer Jaume Alonso Cuevillas, deputy Glòria Freixa, and former minister Jaume Giró.
Junts's Secretary General, Jordi Turull, has been coordinating meetings to define the next steps. If more than one aspirant is confirmed, the process will conclude with a remote vote on June 21st. The party's regulations allow for other scenarios, such as direct designation or an assembly vote, but primaries appear to be the most likely option.
The selection process will be managed by the Municipal Territorial Commission of Barcelona (CMT), comprising representatives from the National Executive Directorate and the Barcelona Federation, along with one representative from each district. Party members will be notified on June 1st to submit pre-candidacies by June 3rd. Subsequently, aspirants will need to gather endorsements from 20% of the party membership.
Once endorsements are collected, the CMT will decide on the final selection method. If primaries are chosen, a 7-day campaign period will follow, leading to a remote vote on the weekend of June 20th and 21st. The results will be announced on June 21st at 8 PM, with a 24-hour window for appeals before the official proclamation of the candidate.
