Construction to renovate the former La Magòria station in Barcelona will commence in January 2028, featuring a project that includes a sports complex and facilities for municipal services.

The site of the former railway station of La Magòria, located in the La Bordeta neighborhood and adjacent to Gran Via in Barcelona, will host a new complex set to begin construction in January 2028. This date represents a five-year delay from initial projections. The Barcelona City Council has confirmed the timeline after resolving appeals filed during the tender process for the renovation of this 21,424 square meter plot, acquired from the Generalitat in 2016.
The new facility will combine sports installations with spaces for municipal cleaning and gardening brigades. The construction, with an estimated budget of 36 million euros, is expected to be completed around 2031. The councilor for Sants-Montjuïc, Raquel Gil, emphasized that this is a "long-awaited and demanded" project by the community.
The sports complex will feature an 8,000 square meter football pitch with stands, a 2,300 square meter football 7 pitch, a 2,500 square meter multi-purpose sports hall with four courts, and 12 indoor petanque courts totaling 1,700 square meters – the first of their kind in Spain under a roof. These facilities will allow the return of teams and athletes who were displaced over ten years ago.
The design, by a temporary union of companies including architectural firms Activitat Arquitectòniques and Barceló Balanzó Arquitectes, designates the subsoil for urban services. It will house a center for street cleaning teams (3,600 m²) with parking, workshop, and waste transfer facilities, as well as a work center for Parks and Gardens (900 m²) for about fifty workers and the maintenance fleet for the district. Access to the sports areas and municipal facilities will be separate.
The transformation of La Magòria also includes the construction of a building for socio-health services and another for allocated housing, although without defined dates. The original 2020 plan projected a total investment of 60 million euros, encompassing 150 housing units for the elderly and social rent, a 24-hour emergency and primary care center, and a socio-health hospital with 261 beds. Additionally, a garden of approximately 5,000 square meters will be created, along with a passage connecting Gran Via to Corral street, envisioned as a future climate refuge.
Raquel Gil noted that the project "must allow for rethinking the green spaces around the upcoming facilities" and improve the connection between Gran Via and Celestina Vigneaux park, creating a new green area that links these spaces.
