The massive exodus of vehicles from the Barcelona area this Saturday, for the Second Pentecost holiday, has generated traffic jams stretching for several kilometers on key routes like the AP-7, particularly towards the Costa Brava. The Catalan Traffic Service estimates that around 600,000 vehicles will leave the Barcelona Metropolitan Area within 24 hours, the highest figure of the year.
The Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan Police) have intensified road safety checks, conducting over a thousand operations across Catalonia's road network. These checks, some with plainclothes officers, have focused on compliance with speed limits, safe distances, and the protection of motorcyclists.
The most significant traffic jams were recorded on the AP-7, with eight kilometers between Mollet del Vallès and Granollers heading towards Girona. There were also considerable disruptions between Gelida and Martorell in the direction of Tarragona. Furthermore, two accidents on the AP-7 on Friday night led to road closures and lane reductions, exacerbating the congestion.
Other roads such as the C-17, the C-25 in Santa Coloma de Farners, the B-10 at the Nus de la Trinitat, the B-20, and the C-32 also experienced significant congestion due to the high volume of traffic.
