This intervention comes just one year after the fountains resumed operation, having been shut down due to drought restrictions. The Barcelona City Council has reported that the work will prevent their operation during the execution period.
The works include the complete emptying of the basins, the dismantling of the fountain elements, the sealing of cracks, the renovation of the interior pavement, and the application of a comprehensive waterproofing treatment to ensure their correct long-term functionality.
The work is expected to be completed by late June, although this date could vary depending on weather conditions and the progress of the tasks. It is worth noting that in 2015, a comprehensive renovation of these fountains was already carried out to improve their efficiency and lighting system.
Among the improvements implemented on that occasion, a telecontrol system was installed to monitor hydraulic elements, safety systems, energy consumption, and water quality. Additionally, the management of light, water, and music show schedules was optimized.
The two ornamental fountains in Plaça Catalunya, built in 1959, are the work of Fernando Espiau Seoane and are part of the square's monumental complex. They replaced the original fountains by Frederic Marès, which were relocated to Gran Via with Rambla de Catalunya.
