The Barcelona Metropolitan Area has initiated the tender process for the works that will transform the old Ca n'Aymerich quarry in Castelldefels into a public park, with a budget of four million euros.

The conversion of the historic Ca n'Aymerich quarry in Castelldefels (Baix Llobregat) is moving forward with the tendering of works by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB). The goal is to transform this space, which previously served as a truck parking lot, into a park open to the public. The project has a base tender budget of four million euros, and interested companies have until June 1st to submit their proposals.
The design, by architecture firms Batlle i Roig (BIR) and Simon i Blanco (SBS), seeks a balance between environmental and natural recovery and the creation of sports, leisure, and meeting points. The first phase will focus on the lower section, with a more urban character and connection to the Camí del Fondo de Ca n'Aymeric and Dolores Ibárruri street. If deadlines are met, works could begin in September of this year.
This area is also known as the site where significant fossil remains were found. In the so-called 'rhinoceros cave', a study by the University of Barcelona (UB) confirmed the presence of prehistoric rhinoceroses approximately 130,000 years ago. Excavations also revealed fossils of Mediterranean turtles, elephants, deer, and bovids.
The future park, located on municipal land, will include green areas with native vegetation, an interpretive space for the 'rhinoceros cave', sports areas, and a small outdoor amphitheater. Facilities for all ages are also planned, such as children's play areas, a dog park, walking paths, and basketball and pickleball courts. The site will feature a night closing system to ensure safety.
The history of Ca n'Aymerich dates back to an old farmhouse from 1391. The quarry began operations in 1945. Over time, the space has had various uses, including a military camp in 1955 and a failed water park project in 2001 that faced local opposition. Subsequently, in 2006, an agreement was signed for a truck parking lot, and in 2020, a funeral home was proposed, also rejected by residents. Finally, in 2024, the local executive rescinded the agreement with the truckers, paving the way for the current park project.
