The Barcelona City Council began restoration works this week on the Umbracle, a historic building in Ciutadella Park constructed in 1883, aiming to return it to its original appearance.

The renovation, designed by architect Josep Fontserè, is expected to take approximately one year and will involve a municipal investment of 2.3 million euros. The space, known for housing plants from various origins, will be restored to regain its historical image.
The work will include the restoration of the facades and their perimeters, as well as interior access points and pathways. Structural elements and the roof closure of the construction will also be reviewed.
According to the council, the rehabilitation aims to transform the Umbracle into a "scientific dissemination space open to the public." This property is listed as a cultural asset of local interest and is part of the Ciutadella del Coneixement project, an initiative with an investment of 433 million euros to create a scientific and innovation hub around the park.
The city council estimates that the works will be completed within a year. In addition to structural rehabilitation, improvements will be made to the furniture, paving, drainage system, and interior signage. Externally, wooden elements from the facades will be recovered, and heritage maintenance tasks will be carried out.
The works will also ensure the adaptation of the space to safety, accessibility, and fire protection requirements, as well as the improvement of the irrigation system. The council has guaranteed that the works will be carried out with respect for the existing vegetation, including the unique plants and trees preserved within the Umbracle.
