Nineteen educational facilities in Barcelona, including schools and institutes, will open their courtyards during the summer of 2026, from June 25th to August 31st, offering leisure and climate refuge spaces for the public.

The city of Barcelona will make the courtyards of 19 public educational centers available to the public during the 2026 summer holidays. This initiative, promoted by the City Council, will commence on Thursday, June 25th, and will run until August 31st. The spaces will be open during various hours, providing opportunities for shared play, reading, or as a refuge from high temperatures.
The municipal program, named 'Patis Escolars Oberts al Barri' (Open Schoolyards to the Neighborhood), aims to transform these grounds into accessible public spaces for all residents outside of school hours. Each open courtyard will be staffed by a team of monitors responsible for managing access and ensuring the proper use of the facilities.

"A meeting place where people participate, interact, engage in recreation with others, and to enhance the educational use of time outside of school hours for children, youth, their families, and adults in general, and to promote the opening of new social spaces and relationships with the citizenry."

Barcelona City Council
According to municipal sources, the objective is for these courtyards to become meeting points that foster social interaction and recreation. Furthermore, it seeks to promote the educational use of free time for children, youth, and adults, creating new socialization spaces. The council emphasizes that these areas encourage values such as respect, cooperation, and responsibility through shared play, contributing to the building of community ties.
