The detection occurred on a beef breeding farm located in the Pallars Jussà region. The animals were investigated after showing clinical signs compatible with the disease. The Catalan Animal Health Laboratory (LASAC) initially identified the virus, and subsequently, the National Reference Laboratory in Algete confirmed it to be serotype 3.
Serotype 3 had already been recorded this season in Galicia, the Basque Country, Navarre, and Huesca. This new detection in the province of Lleida suggests a westward movement of the virus across the Iberian Peninsula.
In light of this scenario, the importance of maintaining active surveillance on farms with susceptible species and reporting any clinical suspicions to the official veterinary services is emphasized. Vaccination is considered the primary preventive measure to minimize disease occurrence and its health and economic impact, particularly relevant for sheep and cattle farms.
