The municipality of Roquetes will kick off its first cultural exchange with Saint Marcel sur Aude, its French twin town, on May 30 and 31. A delegation of Roquetes entities and associations will travel to the Occitan town to share its culture and festive traditions.
The Lira Roquetense band, the Gegants Isabel i Gregori (Isabel and Gregori Giants), the Grallers de Roquetes (bagpipers), and a representative from the Patronat de Festes (Festival Committee) will present a sample of Roquetes' cultural heritage in France. This visit reinforces the twinning agreement officially established last year, coinciding with Roquetes' 175th anniversary.
The delegation, comprising nearly a hundred individuals, will be led by the mayor of Roquetes, Ivan Garcia, accompanied by other members of the municipal corporation. Saturday's program will feature a festive and cultural afternoon in Saint Marcel sur Aude.
On Sunday, May 31, the visit will conclude with an institutional event in Narbonne. This ceremony, organized in collaboration with the Ateneu Republicà de Narbona (Republican Athenaeum of Narbonne), will pay tribute to the former republican mayor of Roquetes, Joan Castells, known as ‘l’Àguedo’, who was exiled in France and died in 1944.
Sisco Ollé, the councilor for Democratic Memory, Culture, and Festivals of the Roquetes City Council, emphasized the significance of this shared project, anticipating an attendance of approximately 400 people in Saint Marcel sur Aude. Ollé also indicated that the meeting will serve as a starting point for planning future educational exchanges between students from both towns, focusing on culture, festivities, and education as the main pillars of the twinning.
