Sant Pau Hospital celebrates tomorrow, October 3rd, the International Day of the Healthcare Social Worker, highlighting the crucial work of its 22 professionals.

The celebration of the International Day of the Healthcare Social Worker, tomorrow, October 3rd, serves as a platform for Sant Pau Hospital to acknowledge the valuable contribution of its professionals. These experts intervene when an illness or diagnosis transcends the clinical sphere, profoundly affecting the lives of individuals, their families, and their social environment.
An illness is never confined to physical health alone. A serious diagnosis can destabilize family equilibrium, a loss of autonomy may create uncertainty about returning home, and factors such as a lack of social support, financial difficulties, or housing problems can directly influence a patient's recovery. It is at this intersection of health and social reality that Healthcare Social Work (TSS) carries out its essential function.
This discipline offers a holistic perspective of the individual, ensuring that the health process considers not only the medical diagnosis but also the social diagnosis, which includes the family, economic, and community environment. TSS also addresses situations of vulnerability, such as violence, and analyzes how social determinants impact differently depending on the pathology.
Sant Pau's Healthcare Social Work team comprises 22 professionals: 19 work at the hospital and 3 at the Centre de Recursos Comunitaris Pi i Molist, under the coordination of the Head of Social Care. At the hospital, these professionals are integrated into various care areas, adapting their interventions to the specific needs of each health process. There are teams dedicated to Emergencies (operating 12 hours daily, 365 days a year), as well as areas such as Women and Children, Addictions and Mental Health, Medicine and Geriatrics, Surgery, Neurology, Hematology, Oncology, Pneumology, and Cardiology, among others, including the Volunteer Program.
At the Centre de Recursos Comunitaris Pi i Molist, the team focuses its activity on the Community Rehabilitation Service, the Housing Area, and the Social Club, conducting individual, family, and group interventions with a strong community component. The scale of their work is significant: at the hospital, TSS professionals work with approximately 15% of admitted patients, while at the community center, they support all individuals linked to their resources.
Through preventive and treatment interventions, these professionals anticipate vulnerability situations, support users and families, facilitate care continuity between different levels and systems (Health and Social Services), and connect people with necessary resources. Their work ranges from planning safe discharges to emotional support, protecting rights, assisting caregivers, and helping to rebuild life projects in mental health.
Sant Pau recognizes the dedication of its Healthcare Social Work professionals, who daily contribute to more comprehensive, coordinated, and humane care, placing individuals and their circumstances at the center of the care process and working to reduce the social inequalities that affect health.
