The theatrical production SHHH!, a collaboration between twelve 3rd-year ESO students from Institut Escola Antaviana and the company José y sus Hermanas, was staged today with two performances at Espai Lliure. The show addresses the complex neighborhood issues arising from noise generated in the playgrounds of several Barcelona schools.
Through playground games, the piece reflects on the delicate balance between children's right to play and the neighbors' need for rest. The creative process, developed throughout the school year, was guided by the company José y sus Hermanas, employing professional methodologies for scene and text creation.
“"The same ones we use ourselves to create our shows"
According to Quim Cubarsí, tutor for 3rd-year ESO at Institut Escola Antaviana and a key figure in the 'En residència' program, the project presented a significant challenge for students not often exposed to culture and the creative process. Nevertheless, he highlighted the personal growth and group cohesion, as students learned to collaborate and support each other.
“"It has been a collective creation, made for a group of young people by a professional theatre collective. It's a wonderful formula that all little people should experience"
This project is part of the 'En residència. Artistes als Instituts' program, promoted by the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (ICUB) and the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona (CEB), which fosters contemporary creation in public secondary schools through artist residencies.
The company José y sus Hermanas, established in 2017, is recognized for its exploration of new narrative forms, blending theatre, performance, and video with a distinct experimental character.
