A strong downburst has ravaged trees, streetlights, motorcycles, and awnings along a 500-meter section of Carrilet Avenue, in the Santa Eulàlia neighborhood of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. The phenomenon, lasting between two and three minutes during a half-hour storm, generated about thirty calls to the Generalitat Firefighters.
Firefighter sergeant Juli Escriche explained that the downburst was caused by "high temperatures and the cold air mass from the rain," describing it as an "extraordinary extreme phenomenon." Despite the material damage, no injuries were reported. However, as a precaution, the location of a summer camp at Bernat Desclot school has been moved, as one of its awnings was also affected.
Firefighters' tasks focused on cutting down trees and branches posing a fall risk, and securing facades and roofs to prevent debris from falling. Escriche recalled that such downbursts are not common, but mentioned a similar event two years ago in Sant Feliu de Llobregat.
Municipal brigades also worked intensively to clear affected areas, with normalcy expected to be restored during the day. The mayor of L'Hospitalet, David Quirós, highlighted the "excellent" coordination among emergency teams, which enabled a swift response. Quirós emphasized that the downburst, affecting a very localized area, "was not predicted," and that other parts of the city experienced minor incidents.
The emergency number 112 received 136 calls from L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Barcelona related to the strong winds.
