The far-right party's event, which will include its leader, Santiago Abascal, and Secretary General, Ignacio Garriga, has prompted a call for mobilization from the Barcelona Anti-fascist Coordinator. This organization has announced a gathering in the same square one hour before the Vox rally, scheduled for 7:00 PM.
The Anti-fascist Coordinator has expressed its rejection of the rally, stating that "our neighborhoods are not territory for fascism" and that "we do not want Abascal or Vox campaigning in our streets, nor any reactionary project gaining ground by dividing and singling us out."
The holding of the Vox event in Barcelona has been confirmed by municipal group sources to TOT Barcelona and announced on the party's social media. Vox had initially proposed Plaça de la Marina in the Zona Franca but changed the location more than a week ago. The permit request to the Barcelona City Council is pending.
This event follows a week after the Diada (Catalan National Day), which resulted in eighteen arrests, including ten minors, for public disorder. Both the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) and Òmnium Cultural criticized the actions of the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan Police), with the ANC denouncing irregular detentions and discriminatory mistreatment.
Although the official candidate for mayor of Barcelona will not be proclaimed at this rally, it is anticipated that the current president of the municipal group, Gonzalo de Oro, may be Vox's candidate for the upcoming municipal elections.
