President Salvador Illa made an institutional statement from the Palau de la Generalitat, where he celebrated the agreement reached with the Spanish Government. He stated that the new model represents "a turning point" and "a unique opportunity," laying the groundwork for "a qualitative and quantitative leap" in Catalan self-government.
“"I call for them to stand on the side of hope, not frustration; on the side of useful politics and solutions, not the politics of blockage and problems."
Illa highlighted that the new system is "fairer" because it significantly reduces differences between autonomous communities, "more efficient" in guaranteeing necessary resources, and "more transparent" as it is based on objective criteria. He stressed that the model is "up to the historical, political, and cultural weight of Catalonia."
Furthermore, the president noted that the additional 4.7 billion euros will allow for the improvement of public services and boost investments, in line with Catalonia's "political, national, and cultural singularity." He insisted on Catalan "solidarity" with Spain and Europe as a whole.
The declaration followed morning meetings with ERC leader Oriol Junqueras and Comuns president Jéssica Albiach. The agreement had been previously finalized between President Pedro Sánchez and Junqueras at the Moncloa the previous Thursday.
