The Canyelles City Council celebrated this Saturday, October 24th, the 30th anniversary of its Giants, Joaquim and Elisabeth, with the unveiling of a sculpture dedicated to the figure of Giant Joaquim in the Castle Gardens.

The event, part of the Benvinguda Tardor program, had to be rescheduled from October 4th due to restrictions from heavy rainfall. Mayor Rosa Huguet recalled the beginnings of the giant group in 1996 and presented commemorative gifts to the original initiators, carriers, and 'grallers' (musicians). Some of them even carried the giants Joaquim, Elisabeth, and the Genet (Knight) once more.
The sculpture, created by artist Virgilio Serna, joins others in the municipality dedicated to local popular dances and entities, such as the Ball de Gitanes, La Patusca, fire groups, 'capgrossos' (big-heads), and 'colles bastoneres' (baton groups).
The Giants of Canyelles, Joaquim and Elisabeth, were created in 1995, inspired by the barons of Canyelles, Joaquim Terré i Pons and Elisabet Ciurana i Pardina, symbolizing the town's history and its independence in 1627. Their construction was commissioned to the Sarandaca workshop in Granollers, directed by Ramon Aumedes, with an investment of two million pesetas.
Over nine months, work was done on their creation, defining their features and attire, and the accompanying 'grallers' group was formed. Unique anecdotes include the change of the baroness's eye color to emerald green and the scroll carried by Joaquim, symbolizing the town's history.
On July 24th, 1996, Joaquim and Elisabeth arrived in Canyelles, becoming central figures in the town's cultural life. For thirty years, they have presided over festivals and parades, keeping the tradition alive through various generations.
