Primary schools and secondary institutes in Sitges opened their doors this September 8th, marking the start of the new 2026-2027 academic year. This year, a total of 2,883 students will pursue compulsory education in the municipality, a figure representing a slight increase compared to the previous year. This variation has not led to significant changes in student distribution among the different educational centers.
Following enrollment periods and the management of late arrivals, the Department of Education and the Sitges City Council have ensured schooling for all children in the compulsory education stage. However, the first day of class coincided with a teachers' strike.
The Councilor for Education, David Martínez Lluís, highlighted the normal start to the academic year in Sitges, stating that the City Council maintains fluid contact with school directors to address any incidents. Martínez reiterated the municipal commitment to educational demands and support for schools, recalling that work is already underway with the Generalitat de Catalunya for the comprehensive renovation of the Esteve Barrachina School, with an estimated investment of 3 million euros.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, student distribution among the centers is as follows: Maria Ossó (419), Agnès de Sitges (192), Esteve Barrachina (392), Escola Pia (447), Miquel Utrillo (608), R. Benaprès (389), and Institut Vinyet (436).
During this summer, the City Council carried out various improvements in public nurseries and schools. The most significant intervention was at the La Moixiganga nursery, with roof waterproofing costing €19,461.16. The Miquel Utrillo School also saw perimeter improvements, including the replacement of the main entrance door and automatic door, as well as raising the fence, at a cost of €14,619.22. At the Esteve Barrachina School, a new stage has been completed in the assembly hall, featuring a wooden platform treated for fire resistance and slip prevention.
The Adult Education Center (CFA Sitges) will hold an open day tomorrow at Carrer de Sant Honorat, 26-28, from 10 AM to 2 PM and 6 PM to 8 PM, to showcase its educational offerings. The event, initially planned for Cap de la Vila, was moved due to anticipated rain.
