A study by the RACC has highlighted that trucks are involved in 55% of serious accidents recorded on the Girona sections of the AP-7. This figure contrasts with the fact that heavy vehicles represent only 27% of the total traffic on this high-capacity road.
The province of Girona leads the Catalan ranking for serious truck accidents on the AP-7, followed by Tarragona (41.7%) and Barcelona (38.7%). The report indicates that the abolition of tolls has increased heavy vehicle traffic on this motorway, with a diversion of traffic from the La Jonquera border towards the Catalan AP-7.
The president of the RACC, Josep Mateu, has called for the management and maintenance of the AP-7 to be transferred to the Generalitat and has expressed openness to introducing a toll or a dedicated "viñeta" for its modernization.
These data are part of the twenty-fourth edition of the road risk map for the Girona counties, which analyzes the period 2022-2024. The study covers 1,216 kilometers of roads and concludes that the risk of a serious or fatal accident on a conventional road is six times higher than on a dual carriageway.
The report also highlights the involvement of motorcycles in 41% of serious accidents with fatalities or serious injuries in Girona, despite representing only 2% of traffic. The GI-682 road between Malgrat de Mar and Lloret de Mar, the C-152 between la Vall d'en Bas and Olot, the N-260 between Llançà and Figueres, and the GI-641 between Torroella de Montgrí and l'Estartit are identified as black spots for these vehicles.
Given the vulnerability of motorcyclists, cyclists, and scooter users, the RACC calls for enhanced training for personal mobility device users. The Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT) has implemented pilot tests on the N-260 to mark motorcyclist lines and prevent run-off-road accidents, with plans to extend this to other roads. Devices will also be installed to warn drivers of the presence of cyclists or motorcycles.
Finally, the study emphasizes that the section of the Gi-673/Gi-674 between Caldes de Malavella and Llagostera presents the highest risk index on conventional roads in the province.
