The Councillor for Sports and Public Health of the Salt City Council, Jordi Subils (Junts), has submitted his resignation after attending the presentation event for the Aliança Catalana candidate in Girona, Marc Vilafañe. The decision comes at the request of the mayor, Cristina Alarcón (ERC), who stated that "there is no place for the far-right" in the municipal government.
The local government, a coalition between ERC and Junts, held a meeting to analyze Subils' presence at the Aliança Catalana event, which took place yesterday in Girona, coinciding with the inauguration of the party's new headquarters in the city. Following the meeting, Alarcón met with the councillor to seek explanations.
According to an official statement from the Salt City Council, Subils acknowledged "his mistake" and justified his attendance as a personal decision, arguing that he knew some of the participants. However, this explanation was not sufficient for the mayor, who demanded his resignation.
“"Anyone who is with or flirts with the far-right cannot be in Salt's government."
The resignation request, according to the council, was agreed upon with the governing partners. Subils was responsible for the Sports and Public Health portfolios. His departure now creates a new dynamic within the municipal government of Salt.
