The “Hospitalized Childhood” project by Red Cross Youth has provided care to over 1,200 individuals at Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona. This initiative, with a history spanning more than three decades, primarily aims to enhance the emotional, social, and educational well-being of hospitalized children and adolescents.
The program seeks to humanize hospital environments and mitigate the psychological impact that hospitalization can have on both minors and their families. In the Girona region, a team of 11 volunteers has been crucial in accompanying 1,212 individuals over the past year.
The initiative is structured around three fundamental pillars. The first focuses on recreational and educational activities, including games, crafts, reading, music, and creative proposals tailored to the needs of each child or adolescent.
The second pillar is educational support, ensuring the continuity of academic learning for minors during their hospital stay. Volunteers offer educational reinforcement, reading activities, and support with digital tools, thereby preventing disengagement from their school environment.
Finally, the third area is emotional support. Volunteers provide assistance and companionship, especially during times when family members cannot be present. This support is vital for reducing feelings of loneliness and fostering a more positive attitude throughout the recovery process.
The project also includes actions aimed at families, offering spaces for accompaniment and emotional support to help them manage the impact of a child's hospitalization. Coinciding with Hospitalized Children's Day, celebrated on May 13, Red Cross Youth emphasizes the importance of continuing to promote such initiatives to ensure spaces for play, learning, and well-being in hospitals.
The organization calls for public participation and volunteering to strengthen these programs designed for vulnerable children and adolescents.
