Girona FC defeated RCD Espanyol 0-2 at the RCDE Stadium on Friday, January 16, 2026, securing the win through two highly disputed penalties scored by Vanat, which sparked incidents among the home crowd.

Espanyol remains unable to beat Girona at their home stadium, accumulating four defeats and two draws in six visits. This latest 0-2 loss marks three consecutive matchdays without a win in 2026. Tensions boiled over after the second goal when a section of the fans threw bottles onto the pitch, one of which struck Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

"The decision to repeat the penalty is a refereeing disgrace."

Manolo González · RCD Espanyol Coach
The first goal resulted from a shirt pull by Omar on Hugo Rincón, which referee Galech Apezteguía deemed a penalty. After Dimitrovic saved the shot and the referee ordered a retake, Vanat changed direction to score the 0-1 just before halftime. The second half was heavily interrupted, and despite Espanyol's chances, including the substitution of Jofre, they failed to score.
The second penalty, also highly questionable, arrived in added time, and Vanat scored again for the definitive 0-2. This action triggered the throwing of objects. Depending on the referee's match report, the club could face sanctions, potentially including the closure of the RCDE Stadium or a section of the ground.
