The center, initially known as Residencia Sanitaria General Álvarez de Castro de Gerona, laid the foundations for the current University Hospital Doctor Josep Trueta. Its original location, across the Ter river, in the municipality of Sant Gregori, in a shantytown area, initially generated some rejection among the Girona population.
“"It was extraordinary, for the propaganda of the old regime, to create a ten-story hospital in a city like Girona, which was so low-rise… but that was difficult to understand."
This was recounted by a surgeon who, along with a historian, documented and wrote the book on the Josep Trueta's 50th anniversary. According to these sources, neither the location nor the initial philosophy of the hospital were well received by the inhabitants of Girona at that time.
However, over the years, the evolution of healthcare, the dedication of Trueta's professionals, and constant medical advances have solidified public trust in the center, which is undeniable today. This information was shared in a recent radio interview.
