Starting from August 1st, the Mossos d'Esquadra will incorporate 1,300 trainee officers, coming from the 33rd promotion of the Police School. This measure is part of the summer plan Helios, presented by the Minister of the Interior, Núria Parlon, and the Director General of the Police, Josep Lluís Trapero, to enhance security during the period of "maximum activity" in tourism and events.
In addition to the officers in training, 82 already qualified personnel will join to reinforce coastal municipalities such as Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Roses, Blanes, and la Bisbal. New corporals and sergeants will also be incorporated for citizen security training, and the usual reinforcement from ARRO officers will be maintained. This increase brings the force closer to its goal of 25,000 officers by 2030, with a current staff of around 21,000.
Minister Parlon highlighted that the police strategy, focused on "more preventive, closer, and present" security, is yielding results, with a decrease in property crime and repeat offending. "With more population, more tourism, and more events, police presence must be reinforced," she emphasized.
The Helios plan will focus on repeat offending, detection of weapons, "sexual violence," control of natural environments, and road safety. The plan's four main pillars include citizen security, reinforcement of command centers, increased traffic personnel, and improved prison services, particularly transfers.
Parlon also warned about "maximum risk days" due to heat, especially in Ponent and Terres de l'Ebre, and urged caution throughout the territory, recommending avoiding sports or outdoor activities during peak solar radiation hours and exercising prudence in bathing areas.
