The construction work, set to commence next July, will span 32 months. The new development will be located on two municipal plots leased to the Institut Català del Sòl (Incasol), designated for affordable rentals.
The properties will be situated at numbers 15-17 and 19-21 on Riera Bullidors street. As explained by the mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas, this initiative reaffirms the council's commitment to housing policies that ensure a dignified home, particularly for those facing difficulties accessing the residential market.
The buildings will feature commercial ground floors and three upper levels, with exposed brick facades and underground parking. Four of the units will be adapted for individuals with reduced mobility, and the council will also have eight apartments for social needs and a 150-square-meter commercial space.
In the future, 40 additional homes are planned for a third plot in the same neighborhood, although its development is stalled due to the presence of archaeological remains. The City Council has requested that the Generalitat de Catalunya cover the costs to unblock the project.
The 48 apartments will adhere to sustainability and energy efficiency criteria, including cross-ventilation. The architecture firm Oikosvia Arquitectura SCCL, winner of the Incasol competition, will oversee the construction. The tender budget amounts to 10.6 million euros, with a 2.1 million euro subsidy from the Next Generation funds.
To be eligible for one of these homes, interested individuals must register in the official protection housing applicants registry. Access conditions, including income limits, will be available soon on the Municipal Housing Office website.
