The Psychosocial Care Team (EAPS) Mutuam Girona and the "la Caixa" Foundation have launched a support group for people going through the grieving process. This space aims to validate emotions, break isolation, and offer support in the face of loss, whether sudden or after a long illness.
One of the participants, Carmen Cabanillas, explains how difficult it is for her to rebuild her life after 52 years of marriage, following her husband's sudden death. "I don't want to accept that my husband will never return," she confesses, highlighting the group's importance as a "refuge" from social pressure to "move on" quickly.
The group, which meets every second and fourth Monday of the month, does not offer magic solutions but a space to listen, understand, and articulate the confusion, guilt, and loneliness that often accompany grief. Psychologist Clara Fraguell, the group's facilitator, notes that many participants wonder if what they feel is "normal," and that the group helps them realize their emotions are shared.
To aid in the process, unanswered questions and unresolved doubts are addressed. In Carmen Cabanillas's case, a conversation with the doctor who attended her husband was facilitated to resolve doubts about his passing, providing her with "peace" and "knowledge" to begin integrating the loss.
The group also welcomes individuals who have experienced loss at a young age or who, having been caregivers, now find themselves unsure how to reposition themselves. The goal is to foster connection and the need to relate through a shared experience, helping to alleviate the burden of absence.
