Hotel establishments in the Girona regions achieved a new historical peak in visitor numbers during July, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). A total of 639,985 travelers stayed in the province's hotels, a 0.05% increase compared to the previous year. This figure represents the best tourist record since 1999.
The rise in visitors is primarily attributed to the growth in domestic tourism. Spanish residents numbered 236,856, a 6% increase from the previous July. Conversely, international visitors decreased by 3.2%, totaling 403,128.
Regarding overnight stays, the trend has been more positive, with a total of 2,227,571 nights registered, a 2.8% increase from the prior year. This marks the second-best July overnight stay record in the entire historical series. The growth was also driven by the domestic market, showing an 8.2% increase.
The average stay per guest has slightly increased to 3.48 nights, up from 3.39 last year. Compared to 2019 figures, before the pandemic, the current traveler volume is 18.2% higher, while overnight stays have grown by 4.6%.
In the year-to-date period from January to July, Girona's hotels have hosted 2,681,582 travelers, a 3.4% increase from the same period last year. Accumulated overnight stays have also grown by 3.3%, reaching 7,460,435. During this period, both domestic and international guests have shown increases.
