The sporting management of Girona FC, led by Quique Cárcel, is immersed in the task of finding a new coach to lead the project of returning to the top flight. With just over a month until the start of the 2026/27 season, the list of potential managers is being refined.
Among the names considered, Javier Calleja stands out. The coach, who managed Villarreal (2017-2020) and Alavés (2021) in La Liga, and Levante (2022-2024) and Oviedo (until matchday 32 of the 2024/25 season) in the Second Division, could be an option for the Girona club.
Calleja has also been linked with Leganés, who are seeking a coach after their main candidate, Ramis, signed with Osasuna. However, the Madrid-based coach would look favorably upon the possibility of joining Girona to achieve the ambitious goal of promotion. It is worth remembering that in his early coaching roles (2017-2024), Calleja had Quique Álvarez, the current coach of Girona B, as an assistant.
Girona's search occurs in a context where other clubs in the First and Second Divisions are also looking for new coaches. Elche has already made official the arrival of Martín Anselmi, while Rayo Vallecano still needs to decide on a replacement for Íñigo Pérez. In the Second Division, Oviedo has signed Julián Calero, Leganés continues its search, and Mallorca, one of the promotion favorites, has lost Demichelis, who has signed for RB Leipzig. In this equation, the name of García Pimienta could also be considered.
