Deputy Mayor and candidate for re-election for Junts, Gemma Geis, has announced her party's decision to leave the Girona government. This departure ends the independentist alliance that had governed the city since 2023, following weeks of escalating tensions among the coalition partners.
The final straw for Junts was that their demands, particularly regarding public road maintenance, were not heard. This decision comes after the latest municipal plenary session and three years of the legislature during which the three independentist parties had approved all budgets.
Mayor Lluc Salellas (Guanyem Girona) had defended the work done by the tripartite, highlighting its importance in defending linguistic rights and managing housing policies, the new Health Campus, and school traffic calming measures. In contrast, Geis calls for greater "management capacity and future vision" to address the "demographic crisis" and improve citizen services.
Disagreements among the partners had intensified since last autumn, with a shift in Junts' discourse. Guanyem Girona eventually agreed to let security set the council's agenda and a three-month period for reviewing the municipal register. Meanwhile, ERC, through Marc Puigtió, has criticized the government's management despite being part of it.
With this rupture, the electoral landscape for the 2027 municipal elections opens up. The PSC, with Sílvia Paneque as a potential candidate, fears winning again without being able to form a governing coalition. The candidacy of Aliança Catalana is also expected, having recently opened an office in the city with Marc Villafañe as their lead candidate.
