Junts has broken the coalition government in Girona City Council with Guanyem and ERC, leaving Mayor Lluc Salellas's executive in the minority less than a year before the 2027 municipal elections.

The current deputy mayor, Gemma Geis, announced the rupture on Tuesday, arguing that "our patience has run out" and that Junts can no longer "condition the direction" set by the mayor, whom she accused of "personalism". Geis stated that the decision was "well-considered" and that "Girona deserves more", listing "shortcomings" such as human resource planning, the state of the streets, or cleaning management.
Geis assured that the break is not motivated by the controversy over the management of the Cinema Truffaut, although that did add to the discontent. Despite moving to the opposition, Junts has offered "an outstretched hand" and promised "constructive opposition" to evaluate decisions based on what is best for Girona.
The Junts leader highlighted as achievements of her party over the past three years the approval of three budgets, prioritizing security with a new police station in the Santa Eugènia neighborhood, not raising local property taxes (IBI), laying the groundwork for public housing policy, and promoting the new Trueta Hospital.
In Monday's plenary session, Mayor Lluc Salellas had defended the continuation of the tripartite pact as "the best option" for an "independentist and clearly republican government", emphasizing the "generosity" of the parties and the commitment to work for cohesion and prevent the far-right from growing.
From the opposition, the PSC and the PP had directly asked Geis about the rupture, but she responded that Junts has "every legitimacy" to evaluate the pact and "demand more".
The regional minister and government spokesperson, Sílvia Paneque, avoided commenting on the rupture, emphasizing the importance of stability and prioritizing citizens' interests over partisan ones. Paneque did not confirm if she will run again as a candidate in the 2027 municipal elections, as she is "absolutely focused" on her ministry's challenges.
The PSC won the 2023 municipal elections in Girona with 8 councilors, the same number as Guanyem. The tripartite pact with Junts (6 councilors) and ERC (3 councilors) allowed Salellas to become mayor.
