After spending sixteen consecutive matchdays, and 133 days, in the relegation zone, the Girona team can finally breathe easier. The victory last Sunday against Mallorca (1-2) at the Son Moix stadium rewards the growth shown by the red-and-whites during the first half of the season.
This milestone allows Girona to move into the seventeenth position, finally looking down the table instead of up. The club struggled to escape the bottom three positions, as direct rivals often won when Girona did.
The shift in momentum is clear: Girona only managed 7 points in the first 11 matchdays, but has secured 11 points in the last 7. Goals from Tsygankov and Vanat at Son Moix have, for now, ended this negative spiral.
This balsamic satisfaction must allow for a before and after to be marked in what remains of the season.
Coach Míchel had set the goal of finishing the first half of the season with 20 points and outside of relegation. Girona now has 18 points and will seek a second consecutive victory at Montilivi next Saturday against Osasuna to reach 21 points.
