The Spar Girona women's basketball team unexpectedly stumbled at the Lointek Gernika Bizcaia court (72-62) on Wednesday, closing the first round of the Women's League with a defeat that cost them the leadership and the honorary winter title.

The weak second half by Spar Girona, especially the last quarter with an 18-6 run, frustrated the team's triumphant progress. This setback prevented the Girona side from achieving their best historical first round. With a final record of 13-2, the winter champion honors went to Casademont Zaragoza (14-1), which secured a home victory against IDK Euskotren (52-46).
Despite the loss, the stellar performance of Marian Coulibaly (25 points, 12 rebounds, and 40 valuation) was not enough for the Girona team, which lost clarity and momentum in the final stretch, unable to stop the momentum of the Basque team. The Uni had started strong (8-18), but Gernika reacted after the timeout called by Lucas Fernández, adjusting the score and momentarily turning the game around.
After leading 30-41 at halftime, Roberto Íñiguez's team saw Gernika charge back after the break. Although a three-pointer by Carter reopened the gap (47-54), the local momentum continued into the final quarter. The two timeouts requested by Íñiguez failed to correct the course of a team that collapsed in the final minutes, lacking attacking ideas and committing numerous turnovers.
With Casademont Zaragoza as the leader and Spar Girona in second place, the eight teams that will play in the Copa de la Reina in Tarragona, from March 26 to 29, have been defined. In addition to the top two, Valencia, Jairis (seeded teams), Perfumerías Avenida, Ensino, IDK Euskotren, and Leganés have qualified. The draw for the pairings will take place on January 14 in Alcobendas.
