The Girona Provincial Council has approved its accession to the Association of Municipalities for Mobility and Urban Transport (AMTU), becoming the first Catalan provincial council to take this step to improve mobility and public transport in the region.

The October Plenary session's agreement aims to strengthen institutional cooperation in addressing the challenges of mobility and public transport in the Girona counties and throughout Catalonia. The goal is to work together on improving services, fostering connectivity between municipalities, and ensuring more equitable access to public transport, considering the needs and specificities of different territories.
This accession is part of a shared commitment to enhance collaboration between local and supramunicipal administrations to respond to mobility challenges, particularly in a context where inter-municipal connections, access to services, and alternatives to private vehicles are key to citizens' quality of life.
The collaboration will focus on providing technical advice to municipalities in planning and managing public transport services, identifying mobility needs, and improving connections between towns, facilities, and major economic hubs. It will also aim to share knowledge and experiences between administrations, promote solutions adapted to rural municipalities and medium-sized cities, and explore funding opportunities for mobility projects.
AMTU is an association of local entities working to improve public transport and mobility, especially in urban transport. It offers technical advice and represents municipal interests to competent authorities. Cooperation with the Girona Provincial Council is significant due to the region's territorial diversity, encompassing cities, medium-sized towns, rural areas, and tourist zones.
The accession formalizes the collaboration intention expressed in May 2026, when the presidents of the four Catalan provincial councils agreed to promote their affiliation with AMTU. The remaining provincial councils are expected to follow suit in the coming months.
