Aena President, Maurici Lucena, announced that Girona-Costa Brava Airport could absorb some air traffic from Barcelona-El Prat while expansion works are underway, due to the impossibility of immediate growth at the main hub.

The head of Aena explained that it is "impossible" for the Barcelona-El Prat airport to maintain an annual growth rate of 4-5% until the planned expansion works are completed. This operational limitation is what will generate the need to divert flights.

"During the expansion works, a spillover effect is expected, with activity being diverted towards the Girona-Costa Brava Airport and also to Reus."

This "spillover effect" means that air activity that cannot be managed in the Catalan capital will be redistributed among regional airports. The extent of this traffic diversion towards Girona and Reus will depend directly on the total duration of the infrastructure works in Barcelona.
