Hospital Santa Caterina in Salt has launched a new Surgical Short-Stay Unit (UCEQ), designed for patients requiring observation and medium-complexity post-operative care for a short period, typically less than 72 hours.

The new unit, positioned between day surgery and conventional hospitalization, has cared for 213 patients in its first three months of operation, with an average stay of 2.6 days. Its aim is to provide a specific care pathway for procedures needing continuous monitoring of pain control, mobilization, and discharge preparation, facilitating a quicker recovery at home.
Activity has been distributed across various surgical specialties, led by General and Digestive Surgery (70 patients), followed by Urology (58 patients) and Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery (COT) (54 patients). Patients from Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) and Plastic Surgery have also been treated.
The UCEQ features single and double rooms, adapted bathrooms, and space for companions. The care team comprises professionals from Anesthesiology, surgery, Nursing, TCAI, and administrative staff. Admissions occur from Monday to Thursday, with the goal of discharge within 72 hours, provided the patient's clinical condition allows.
This initiative helps optimize hospital resources by freeing up conventional inpatient beds for more complex cases and reinforcing a surgical care model focused on agile and safe recovery.
