The municipal plenary of Calella has given the green light to the early termination of the street cleaning and waste collection contract, approving a new award that represents the municipality's largest investment in this area.

The new contract, with a duration of five years and a budget of 22.7 million euros, is the highest ever managed by the municipality for cleaning and waste management services. The company Urbaser will continue to lead the service, having obtained the best score in the bidding process.
The decision to terminate the previous contract, which extended until 2027, was made due to it being considered outdated and insufficient to meet the current needs of the town. The termination will not entail any additional cost for the City Council, as the company has waived any compensation.
Among the notable innovations of the new service model, the implementation of door-to-door collection for large generators, such as tourist and commercial establishments, is included. Furthermore, container points will be transformed into complete recycling islands, with the aim of improving cleanliness and increasing selective collection rates.
The contract also foresees an increase in the frequency of street cleaning, adapting the service to different times of the year (low, mid, and high season). Likewise, machinery will be renewed with the acquisition of new, more efficient vehicles and equipment to optimize operations.
The proposal was approved with the favorable votes of the municipal government, Junts, PSC, and the Partido Popular. The groups of Esquerra Republicana, Estimem Calella, Calella en Comú, and the CUP voted against the agreement.
