To mark the centenary of the death of Dr. Marià Serra i Font, the Centre d´Estudis Lluís Domènech i Montaner has organized a series of events to celebrate the figure of one of the most significant protagonists in the transformation of Canet de Mar between centuries.
Marià Serra was notable not only as a doctor and scientist committed to modernizing Catalan medicine but also as the mayor of Canet de Mar, a historian, scholar, and journalist, founder of the weekly newspaper La Costa de Llevant. He played a significant role in the origins of local and regional Catalanism, advocating for a modern model of municipal management.
His involvement with associative networks and his social action initiatives were decisive in shaping the foundations of the current municipality. His close friendship with architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner led to various urban planning and modernization programs that transformed the town's appearance.
The centenary aims to critically review his legacy, contextualize it within the historical framework of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and highlight his contribution to local history, heritage, and collective memory.
The first event will be a tribute conference titled 'Marià Serra i Font (1863-1926), a life serving Canet and Catalonia', presented by historian Carles Sàiz i Xiqués.
The conference will take place on Friday, September 18, at 6:30 PM in the Aula Magna of the CRTTT-Escola de Teixits in Canet de Mar. The event is free of charge.
