The expansion of the TecnoCampus university and business park in Mataró has been officially presented. The project will allocate 20 million euros to add 13,000 square meters, which will include new classrooms, spaces for businesses, and a small auditorium. Inauguration is scheduled for 2029.
The investment is financed by 18 million euros from a recently formalized bank loan and 2 million euros from the Generalitat de Catalunya, marking the first time the government has allocated its own funds to the campus. This contribution from the Generalitat, championed by the Minister of Economy, Alícia Romero, highlights the commitment to significant projects outside of Barcelona.
With this expansion, the campus's infrastructure will increase by 25%, growing from the current 45,000 sqm to 57,000 sqm. The general director of TecnoCampus, Josep Lluis Checa, emphasized that the center, with 4,600 students, is a benchmark for innovation and knowledge transfer to businesses.
Minister Alícia Romero praised the campus as a leading institution in Catalonia, noting its appeal to students from across the country. Both she and the mayor of Mataró, David Bote, recalled the project's beginnings around 2010 and highlighted the courage and decisiveness needed to advance such significant initiatives aimed at transforming the productive model.
Mayor Bote described the TecnoCampus model as innovation-focused, "Anglo-Saxon style," and pointed to its contribution to business creation in the city, even during economic downturns. The expansion also plans to include a student residence, laboratories, and simulation infrastructure, with a long-term future vision.
