The heavy rainfall that stalled over the Montsià area during Wednesday afternoon forced Protecció Civil (Civil Protection) to issue a flood warning, especially for Alcanar, the most affected municipality. Although the situation eased in the evening, emergency services urged maintaining caution due to the possibility of locally intense showers overnight.
Water accumulation was significant, with records of up to 100 mm per square meter in the last 24 hours in some parts of the region, such as Amposta. Other locations like Mas de Barberans recorded 69 liters/m² and Els Alfacs, 54 liters/m². In Alcanar, the floods affected several streets and forced the preventive closure of municipal facilities such as the Municipal School of Music and libraries.
Regarding road infrastructure, Trànsit (Traffic) had to close the TP-3318 road between Ulldecona and Alcanar, and the TP-3311 between Santa Bàrbara and La Galera. Access to Alcanar via the N-340 was also closed until seven in the evening. The Bombers (Firefighters) received only 8 calls in Montsià, mostly in Alcanar, for water ingress in basements and parking lots.
This new episode of intense rain comes the same week that the mayor of Alcanar, Joan Roig, resigned, exhausted by the management of five severe flash floods in seven years. Protecció Civil maintains recommendations to avoid travel and not cross rivers, streams, and ravines, reminding the public of the importance of calling 112 in case of emergency.
