The city of Amposta is getting ready for the XVIII edition of the Festa del Mercat a la Plaça, which will take place from May 15 to 17, with a theme focused on local sports.

This cultural event, already a fixture in the Terres de l'Ebre calendar, reaches its coming of age with an immersion into the town's sporting history. The event, considered one of the most participatory in the city, will transform Amposta into a living stage from the early 20th century.
This year's edition will focus on cycling and football, fundamental elements in the collective memory of Amposta residents. The main theme will be the commemoration of the centenary of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya's passage over the Pont Penjant in 1926, as well as a tribute to the local sporting tradition and the Club de Futbol Amposta, which has already surpassed a century of history.
With a total of 111 programmed activities, the Festa del Mercat will fill the streets with period costumes, shows, gastronomy, music, and various historical reenactments. The celebration will officially begin on Friday, May 15, with the opening speech delivered by a descendant of one of Amposta's most prominent cyclists of that era.
Among the most notable proposals will be a reenactment of the Volta Ciclista, vintage football matches, night routes, and already emblematic activities such as the Cursa Enigmàtica (Enigmatic Race), the Sopar a les Fosques (Dinner in the Dark), or the Tasta el Mercat de nit (Taste the Night Market).
One of the festival's great successes is citizen involvement, with associations, entities, and residents actively participating in transforming the streets and recreating Amposta as it was a hundred years ago. Beyond the cultural program, the Festa del Mercat a la Plaça has established itself as a tool for tourist and identity promotion for the city and the Terres de l'Ebre, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
