The mayor of Amposta, Adam Tomàs, considers it a unique opportunity to explore the potential integration of the Ebre region's municipal hospitals into the CatSalut system. This possibility emerges thanks to the budget agreement between ERC and the socialist government of the Generalitat, which includes an explicit reference to studying the transfer of centers like the Hospital de Jesús and the Terres de l'Ebre Clinic in Tortosa, as well as the Amposta Comarcal Hospital. Currently, these hospitals are managed by municipal companies, representing a considerable financial burden for the town councils.
Tomàs has described being able to analyze the viability of this change as "extremely important." Although the budget pact does not guarantee integration, it does open the door to studying Amposta's Hospital's fit within the Catalan healthcare network. The mayor recalled previous successful cases, such as the transfer of the Escola d'Art in Tortosa to the Diputació, which was beneficial for all parties. In the healthcare sector, integration could improve services not only in Amposta but throughout the region, in addition to strengthening the safety and working conditions of employees, following the example of the Hospital de Móra d'Ebre.
With prudent optimism, the mayor acknowledges that there may be dissenting voices but insists on the responsibility to analyze the agreement. He calls for transparency regarding the services that would be offered and the control role of the town councils, assuring that no blank checks will be signed. He pointed out that similar models have already been applied in Berga and the Pyrenees, and that municipal hospitals are currently residual. Therefore, he considers it essential not to miss the opportunity to explore this healthcare integration.
