With this accession, the two municipalities join the seven towns that were already part of the project from the beginning: Balenyà, El Brull, Torelló, Sant Julià de Vilatorta, Sant Vicenç de Torelló, Sobremunt, and Tavèrnoles. Onaigua now serves a total of 29,300 inhabitants and manages 380 km of drinking water network, 80 km of sewage collectors, 14 water intakes, and 23 reservoirs.
The welcome event, held this Tuesday midday, was attended by political representatives from the Consell Comarcal d’Osona, the two new municipalities, and the already integrated town councils. Marçal Ortuño, president of the Consell Comarcal d’Osona, emphasized the trust generated by this model of municipal collaboration.
The mayor of Aiguafreda, Miquel Parella, highlighted the opportunity to join a consolidated project, while the mayoress of Sant Martí de Centelles, Núria Roca, stressed the commitment to a public, territorial project with a shared vision of water management. Enric Mayo, mayor of Sant Vicenç de Torelló, shared his municipality's positive experience, noting citizen attention and joint planning.
The Consell Comarcal d’Osona is the only one in Catalonia managing the entire water cycle through three public companies: Aigües d’Osona (abstraction), Onaigua (supply), and Depuradores d’Osona (sanitation). Griselda Castells, delegate councilor for the Water Cycle, remarked that coordinated management optimizes resources and improves service quality in the face of climate change.
Onaigua, established in 2019 and operational since 2022, originated from municipal will. Despite challenges like drought, it has promoted digitalization with remote metering, improving network efficiency. Ester Coma, president of Onaigua, stated that the entry of the new municipalities reinforces the project and that the challenge is to continue increasing efficiency and preparing for future water challenges.
The new municipalities will work with Onaigua to improve network efficiency, advance in digitalization, reduce water losses, and plan necessary investments to ensure resilient service against climate change effects, consolidating Onaigua as a tool for territorial cooperation.
