The film, loosely based on the book Tres cuencos: Rituales para un año de crisis, tells the story of Marta (Alba Rohrwacher) and Antonio (Elio Germano), a couple who decide to separate after a seemingly insignificant argument. When Marta discovers she has an illness, her life changes, prompting her to live intensely.
Critics have praised the naturalistic performances of the actors, especially the chemistry between Alba Rohrwacher and Francesco Carril, and how Coixet turns Rome into an emotional extension of the characters. The film has been described as one of the director's most well-rounded works.
