The VI Technical Snow and Avalanche Workshops, held at the ICGC, brought together professionals and specialists to share knowledge and experiences in avalanche prevention, public safety, and land management. The meeting follows a winter season 2025-2026 in which over a thousand avalanches were recorded in the Catalan Pyrenees.
Challenges arising from climate change are being discussed, such as the evolution of snow conditions and warming based on altitude, which affect avalanche risk prediction. Artificial intelligence, automatic warning systems, and new observation and simulation technologies are key tools for better understanding these phenomena and anticipating danger.
Topics addressed include basal slides recorded in the Ter-Freser sector, which present particular prediction difficulties. The analysis of these episodes helps improve prevention. Experiences in ski resort safety and satellite positioning applications for victim location have also been presented.
Information and training are essential for safety. The Avalanche Danger Bulletin (BPA) issued daily by the ICGC during the snow season provides key data for activity planning and risk management. A round table on avalanche accidents was held with participation from rescue, prediction, and training specialists.
The workshops are organized by the ICGC, the Conselh Generau d’Aran, the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya, Andorra Recerca i Innovació, and the Associació per al Coneixement de la Neu i les Allaus, with the collaboration of various entities such as FGC Turisme.
