The historic tree in Plaça de l'Arbre in La Pobla de Segur, a witness to the town's life since 1870, will begin a new phase on Monday. Due to its progressive deterioration, diseases, and rot, exacerbated by a branch falling last year, the tree will be transformed into a natural sculpture named 'the Tree of Life'. The intervention follows expert recommendations to ensure safety and preserve the memory of this local symbol.
Mayor Marc Baró acknowledged that the decision was "difficult but necessary," aware of the emotional impact on residents. After gathering public proposals, this solution was chosen to maintain the tree's essence as a "witness and companion" to the inhabitants' lives.
The 'Tree of Life' sculpture aims to symbolize the life cycle and evoke the many moments experienced around the tree for over 150 years. A specialized sculptor will begin working on the original wood this week, integrating new artistic elements.
This initiative is part of a broader public space transformation project, which will include a comprehensive renovation of the square under the Pla de Barris i Viles program. The goal is to modernize the area by renewing paving, landscaping, and furniture, and removing architectural barriers to make it accessible.
