Since Friday afternoon and throughout the weekend, at least a dozen cats have died in the town of Pallars Sobirà. The attack has not only affected the feline population, but four dogs have also been intoxicated, two of which are in very serious condition.
The presence of pet food and chicken pieces with toxic substances deliberately placed in strategic locations in the municipality has been detected. Although the definitive laboratory results are still pending, initial hypotheses suggest that the substance used could be rat poison.
Given the seriousness of the events, the municipal brigade has acted swiftly to clean affected areas and remove any suspicious food remains. In parallel, the Rural Agents have collected samples of the baits for analysis to accurately determine the chemical component used.
“"The use of poison in public spaces is a totally prohibited practice and classified as a criminal offense, which can lead to high economic sanctions and prison sentences."
The Esterri d'Àneu Town Council has filed a complaint with the Mossos d'Esquadra, who have already initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for this animal cruelty offense. Meanwhile, the council has asked pet owners not to let their pets out unsupervised until the situation is brought under control.
These events have generated deep consternation and fear among the municipality's residents. The fact that the poison has been found in public spaces not only poses a danger to urban and domestic fauna but also represents a potential risk to public health.
