The Consorci de l'Estany is actively participating in the conservation of the auricled mussel (Margaritifera auricularia), a freshwater mollusc species currently found only in the Ebro River.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge coordinates the Working Group for the Margaritona or auricled mussel, focused on conserving this species that only survives in the Ebro. The Consorci's participation is part of the collaboration of its mussel breeding laboratory at the Estany de Banyoles in the recovery project.
The meeting, held in Zaragoza, served to discuss the species' current situation and conservation strategy, with the presence of the Ministry, regional representatives, and technicians from the Margaritifera breeding center in Aragon.
During the visit, the Consorci learned about the “Centro de Recuperación de Fauna Silvestre de la Alfranca”, a facility dedicated to the conservation, reproduction, and research of mussels from the Government of Aragon, a world pioneer.
Approximately 30 auricled mussel specimens have been transferred from this center to the Banyoles laboratory for fattening before being released into the wild. This collaboration aims to pool synergies for the species' breeding and conservation, including water analysis and improvements in breeding techniques.
