Minister of Justice, Ramon Espadaler, has underscored the importance of peace judges as a "key tool for territorial cohesion and proximity" during the meeting of peace judges from Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre, held in Vinebre (Ribera d'Ebre). Espadaler argued that these professionals continue to be "a useful, accessible figure capable of helping to resolve everyday conflicts before they reach the courts".
Currently, Catalonia has 898 municipal justice offices, formerly peace courts, serving 3.2 million citizens and covering 92% of the territory. The meeting, organized by the Catalan Association for Justice Promotion, is part of the annual cycle of territorial sessions aimed at fostering dialogue and experience exchange among municipal justice stakeholders.
The head of Justice framed the meeting within the transformation process of the proximity justice model promoted by the Government, through the Peace and Proximity Justice Plan 2025-2028. Espadaler stressed the need to "preserve what works" in this transformation, seeking a balance between organizational and technological modernization and the maintenance of the proximity and trust that characterize peace justice.
