The event, organized by the Catalan Association for Justice, served as a space for dialogue and exchange of experiences among local justice professionals. The minister underscored the fundamental role of peace judges as an "essential piece of the Catalan judicial system," particularly at the municipal level.
Espadaler emphasized that "proximity justice is a tool for territorial cohesion and public service rooted in municipalities." He highlighted the usefulness of these professionals in "helping to resolve everyday conflicts before they reach the courts," thereby ensuring access to justice, especially in small towns.
Currently, Catalonia has 898 municipal justice offices, serving 3.2 million citizens and covering 92.3% of the territory. These offices play a key role in conflict prevention and promoting dialogue.
The meeting is part of the 2025-2028 Peace and Proximity Justice Plan, promoted by the Government, which aims to modernize the organization, technology, and training of these offices while preserving proximity and trust.
The minister reaffirmed the Government of Catalonia's commitment to a justice system that is "more accessible, more efficient, and better adapted to the country's territorial diversity," and advocated for the grouping of peace judges and justices, while respecting local autonomy.
The event included a dialogue session on regulatory updates and future challenges, gathering input to define the new proximity justice model. Previously, Espadaler met with the mayor of Vinebre, Sandra Rico, and other council members.
