The council of Molló has given the green light to an ethical plan for the management of feline colonies present in the municipality. Currently, it is estimated that there are around forty stray cats distributed across several colonies.
With the enactment of new animal welfare laws at both Catalan and Spanish levels, responsibility for these animals now falls upon the town councils. For this reason, the council has developed and approved this plan to ensure the control of the animals and prevent neighborhood disturbances or public health issues arising from the cats' poor condition.
According to Mayor Josep Coma, seven colonies have been identified, some with over twenty animals. The procedure includes the capture, sterilization, and microchipping of all animals, which will be registered under the name of the Molló Town Council.
These actions are carried out in collaboration with the Associació d’Amics dels Animals de la Vall de Camprodon (Association of Friends of Animals of the Vall de Camprodon), which has accredited volunteers to ensure the highest standards. These volunteers are the only ones authorized to feed the animals, and residents are reminded not to do so.
The annual cost of this plan for the municipal coffers ranges between 3,000 and 4,000 euros. The regulations also establish penalties for non-compliance, such as fines of up to 300 euros for not microchipping companion animals (dogs, cats, and ferrets), and 150 euros for feeding them or not registering them.
