The Catalan Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives (FCAC) has announced that the almond production for the current season could reach 12,656 tonnes, representing a 7% increase compared to the previous campaign. This improvement is attributed to similar harvests but with better expectations, especially in rain-fed crops. The spokesperson for dry fruit at FCAC, Roger Palau, highlighted that this is the second consecutive season without direct drought impact, no significant frost, and favored by a winter with abundant rainfall. Furthermore, better performance is expected in irrigated crops thanks to the maturation of new plantations.
By province, Lleida is expected to lead the increase with a forecast of 7,895 tonnes (+11.2%), followed by Tarragona with 4,643 tonnes (+0.8%). The provinces of Barcelona and Girona also anticipate harvests higher than last year, although with lower volumes than the two main provinces.
Regarding cultivated area, FCAC indicates a slight decrease of 2.5%, standing at 30,513 hectares in Catalonia. While the irrigated area remains stable, rain-fed land has lost 751 hectares, although it continues to be the majority (60.5%). Organic production also shows a slight increase, reaching 4,298 hectares.
In relation to carob production, FCAC forecasts 13,500 tonnes, a 12.5% increase from the 12,000 tonnes of the past campaign. However, the organization expresses concern about the downward trend in prices in recent years, which could discourage the harvesting of a portion of the production.
